How They Differ

Flatbed scanners have a glass plate where you place documents face-down for scanning. Sheet-fed scanners pull documents through the scanning mechanism automatically. Each design has distinct advantages for different scanning tasks.

Flatbed Scanner Strengths

Flatbed scanners handle documents of any size, thickness, or condition. They scan bound books, fragile papers, photos, and three-dimensional objects like ID cards. There is no risk of the document being damaged during scanning because the paper does not move.

Sheet-Fed Scanner Strengths

Sheet-fed scanners excel at batch scanning multiple pages quickly. Automatic document feeders handle stacks of 20 to 100 or more sheets, scanning both sides simultaneously with duplex capability. They are significantly faster than flatbed scanners for multi-page jobs.

Scan Quality

Both types produce comparable image quality at the same resolution. Flatbed scanners may offer slightly higher maximum resolution, but for standard document scanning at 300 DPI, the quality difference is negligible.

Space and Portability

Sheet-fed scanners are generally more compact than flatbed scanners. Some models are small enough to carry in a laptop bag, making them suitable for mobile professionals.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose a flatbed scanner if you scan diverse media types, books, or fragile documents. Choose a sheet-fed scanner if you primarily scan standard paper documents in batches and value speed and efficiency.
