Duplex Printing: Save Paper and Reduce Costs

What Is Duplex Printing?

Duplex printing means printing on both sides of each sheet of paper. Automatic duplex printers handle this without user intervention, flipping the page internally and printing the second side. Manual duplex requires you to reload paper to print the reverse side.

Benefits of Duplex Printing

Printing on both sides of the paper cuts paper consumption by up to fifty percent. This reduces printing costs, saves storage space for printed materials, and lowers your environmental impact.

Setting Up Duplex Printing

Most printers with automatic duplex capability need to have duplex printing enabled in the printer driver settings. In your print dialog, look for options labelled as two-sided printing, duplex, or print on both sides, and select the binding edge that matches your document orientation.

When to Use Duplex

Duplex printing works well for multi-page reports, internal documents, drafts, and any document where reducing paper consumption is beneficial. For documents intended for professional presentation, single-sided printing may be preferred.

Paper Compatibility

Automatic duplexing works best with standard weight paper. Very thin or very thick paper may not feed reliably through the duplex mechanism. Check your printer's specifications for the supported paper weight range for duplex printing.
