How to Fix and Prevent Printer Paper Jams

Clearing a Paper Jam

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Open the front panel, rear access door, and any paper trays. Locate the jammed paper and gently pull it out in the direction the paper normally travels through the printer. Avoid tearing the paper, as small pieces left inside can cause additional jams.

Check All Paper Paths

Paper can jam in multiple locations including the input tray, inside the printer near the cartridges, and at the output area. Check each of these locations even if you have already removed paper from one area. Small torn fragments can cause repeated jams.

After Clearing the Jam

Close all panels, plug the printer back in, and power it on. The printer should reset and be ready to print. If an error message persists, try turning the printer off and on again.

Preventing Paper Jams

Use paper that is the correct weight for your printer. Fan the paper stack before loading to separate the sheets. Do not overfill the paper tray beyond its capacity markings. Store paper in a dry environment to prevent moisture-related curling and sticking.

Frequent Jams

If your printer jams frequently despite using proper paper and following best practices, the paper feed rollers may need cleaning or replacement. Consult your printer manual for roller cleaning instructions or contact a service technician.
